I hadn't been to a thrift store in like...two whole weeks or something!
But today I hit two, and I got wondrous stuff.

It was marked $2.99 and looked like it had a green sticker on it. Apparently it was yellow, because yellow was half price. $1.50 baby!!!! And to think I almost turned this down...

I received a termination notice from my current roommate with no reason as to why (yes, seriously). We had some business dealings that fell through, but I believe that should not be considerable cause for termination of a lease. When inquired as to when she would be giving me my deposit, she has ignored my phone calls and texts (she is out of state). ARGH! What to do?
Also, if anyone is looking to sublease their apt or looking for a roomie. Feel free to shoot me a msg. :) Budget is 1,000

Well, well, well. The New York Times is getting out of the radio biz and is selling WQXR to ::drumroll:: WNYC. Univision is also involved; its Spanish-language music station will take the 96.3 spot on the dial and WQXR is moving to 105.9.
More details here.

I'm in desperate need for colored tape (preferably duct tape) in colors other than black and silver...purple, pink, yellow...for this weekend and have no idea where to look. The place i always got them is in New Jersey and I can't get there.
Anyone know where i can go? i'm willing to travel a bit. Manhattan and Brooklyn would be best though

dear new yorkers,
i called some temp agencies and i'm like, "what up, temp agencies? when can i come in and get this shit rolling?"
and temp agencies were like, "sorry, dude. you can't come in. email us your resume."
is this shit typical?
should i just go in and act like i didn't know?
are they just feeding me a line of bullshit because they are lazy and don't want to deal with me?
any advice you could give me would be great.

I've signed a lease for an apartment in Woodside starting July 31. Everything seemed to be going pretty well, but one confusing issue came up. Apparently, we have to pay for heat & hot water, but only insofar as it's connected to electricity and gas. Or ... something like that.
The lease agreement says that the Owner is required to provide utilities as regulated by the law (which are heat and hot water, to the best of my knowledge), while the Renters have to pay for electricity and gas. However, the owner is saying that our electricity and gas will also pay for the heat and hot water.
Does this make sense? Is this normal for NYC apartments?

I am moving to New York next month to begin graduate school and the apartment complex I was looking to rent with fell through. So I am back to square one, which means mostly combing Craigslist for the moment. If possible, I would like to begin renting August 15th, so am going to New York the last week of July to look around Queens in earnest (specifically in Kew Gardens and Fresh Meadows).
- Is there some specific way to seek out apartments/leases that start August 15th? - Should I state my intention to start mid-month upfront or should I wait to see the apartment before discussing that with the landlord? From what I read, there seems to be no legal reason to turn me away for wanting to start mid-month, but hey, lots of landlords are unscrupulous. - Do I ask to prorate or does the lease just start and finish on the 15th of the month? It seems this is up to the discretion of the landlord. - Is starting a lease midmonth absurdly hard to do in New York? (It really isn't feasible to move in September 1st or financially sound to move in August 1st so I am a bit stuck.)
Any other friendly words of advice are truly appreciated as I am a constant worrier (and almost need to worry to function). This site has seemed most useful so far to me: NYC Rent Guidelines Board.

A few hours ago, brown rusty water started pouring down from cracks in the ceiling in my bathroom and bedroom. MIRACULOUSLY, I was able to contain the downpour in my bedroom so none of my valuable possessions were damaged, but my hallway and bathroom was completely flooded. There is water damage on my ceilings, the dirty water made a mess, and despite my "luck", the experience was rather horrifying. If I hadn't been home at the time, many of my possessions may have been ruined, and I'd probably be ankle deep in water.
The super stopped the flooding after an hour, and was very vague about what had happened. Something about a pipe bursting. My question is, is it enough to file a housing complaint? I've heard cases in which maintenence neglect on behalf of the landlord resulted in a lower rent or some kind of compensation for damage. Or would this be a case for rental insurance? Has anyone had a similar experience? If so, how did you handle it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thrifting is part of my daily routine, so my home is pretty much filled with thrifted items. Here are a few of my most recent finds.
Found at an Arc thrift store in Colorado paid $14 for it, but I couldn't leave it there...

I was upset after visiting my local library and having a bird commit suicide into my windshield (cracking it terribly) so my hubby took me thrifting about a week and a half ago--some of this is from then, and some earlier:
( Books, some dishes and random other stuff... )
I found some good stuff!!! ^_^

So google is not doing what I want it to do.
Does anyone know of any supply stores that sell waitor/waitress goodies? Notepads? Trays? Aprons? I am looking to purchase some personal items and not in bulk.
Thoughts? Insight?

I think it's a Cramer Desk Chair (the C is missing from the back) and probably circa 1970s. I got it for $3.50. It still swivels and rolls perfectly. I love it. It's my new desk chair.

I got my license 10 years ago and can count on one hand how many times I've gotten behind the wheel (love the subway.)
I am looking for customer-recommended driving teachers in South Brooklyn (a specific name is a bonus.) I'm the type of person who would panic and freeze in a stressful situation, so I need someone with a dual-control car who is also very patient. I got multiple hairy eyeballs from my first instructor.
I really need pointers on merges and highway driving.

I recently signed up for a Zipcar membership, though have yet to use it. I just spent some time reading reviews online before I make my first reservation and am getting a little bit nervous by the negative experiences being shared (mostly regarding the state of the car, the availability and insurance issues). A lot of the reviews are from two or three years ago, when the company was younger, so I'm hoping that experiences have improved. Luckily, Zipcar does have the option of canceling a membership within 30 days of signing up but seeing as I would actually like to use the service within the next week or so, I was hoping I could get a few more recent reviews. Is it worth it, or should I cancel and just use a traditional car rental agency when necessary?

I hadn't used real film in at least 6 years. But, in cleaning up recently, I just stumbled on an old camera that still had an almost fully shot roll of film in it. And I don't have a clue what's on it so I'd like to get it developed and relieve the mystery.
The place I used to use wasn't really all that dependable and seemed expensive to boot. I don't even know if they're still open since I don't walk that block so much anymore either.
So, I'm wondering where people would recomend I take this roll? Ideally in the east 50s or 60s but I'm obviously not completely locked in that chunk of the city....

I suppose this question may also pertain to laundromats, but it specifically relates to apartment buildings with laundry in the basement, or some other shared laundry situation.
What is your position in regards to someone taking out your laundry from either the washer or dryer once its done but you are not yet there to retrieve it? This happened to me today as I walked down to transfer my laundry from washer to dryer and I suppose the machine had finished about a minute or two before I arrived and my clothes (mostly underwear) were put into one of the laundry carts. Personally, this makes me uncomfortable-although I do realize that it does happen when you live with other people. But I would never take anyone's belongings out of the machine no matter how long I had to wait. Just curious as to what people think or do in these situations, on either side of the coin.

Just a heads-up, in the comments there are some spoilers for season 3 of the show Torchwood, if you haven't seen it yet, you may want to avert your eyes.

I'm really excited about a few of these and no one else gets it so I'm happy to share here.
Old Books from Peninsula Rescue Mission Thrift Store $2 for all. I went to a new thrift store called Morning Star Thrift Store. The place was really junky (and kinda smelled funny) but they had so many old books (it was like a book graveyard!) and a ton of vintage suitcases (I got the trunk though). I was a little worried that they were going to charge me a ton for the things I picked out (because they were price at the counter) but the guy said $7.35 for the four books and my trunk and I was like SOLD! If I hadn't been so excited to pay for my stuff and get it in my car I probably would have bought a TON more books. Note I found tucked inside Modern Biology.
( More Old Books, an Old Trunk, Furniture and Vintage Dresses! )
